French Bulldog Key Breed Facts

Out of 244 dog breeds, the French Bulldog comes in first place as the UK’s most popular dog breed. This is in part thanks to their historical trendiness, and celebrity endorsement of the breed. It is also thanks to their loveable and easy-going nature and their adorable faces and stature. Dog owners have affectionately taken to referring to them as Frenchies, Frog Dogs, Bat-Pigs and Clown Dogs – All in good spirit of course! I’ve not known a single person who has owned a French Bulldog and genuinely thought them ugly!

 

When compared with other dog breeds, A French Bulldogs lifespan is found to be about average with most Frenchies living between 10 and 14 years. The oldest Frenchie ever recorded reached a record breaking 14 years and 8 months old. Even though they were originally created through breeding techniques, they are wholly considered a pedigree breed, recognised by the Kennel Club specifically as a Utility Breed – dogs who were initially bred to be useful and beneficial to human life in some way. For instance, poodles were bred for duck hunting and border collies for sheep shepherding.  But that’s not to say they aren’t beneficial now, they just aren’t working considered dogs anymore and are much more comfortable curling up on your lap and having a little snooze.

French Bulldogs are relatively expensive dogs, with the average price for Kennel Club registered French Bulldogs being around £2,000 – £3,500 and for non-Kennel Club registered – £1,500 – £1,800.  Due to their because of their popularity, don’t expect the price to come down any time soon. However, you’ll be hard pressed to find a single Frenchie owner who regrets the money they spent to get their pooch. They are worth every penny – loving, affectionate without being needy, cheeky, and low maintenance.
